Match Summary:
MVP: No.4 Saudi Arabia
It was a night of high drama as Saudi Arabia came back from a goal down at
half-time to score twice in the second half and in the dying seconds of the
game to snatch a superb win and a berth in the 1999 World Youth U-20
Championship final in Nigeria.
With the win, Saudi Arabia also became the first team from the Asian U-19
final in Chiang Mai to qualify for the World Youth Championship. The Saudis
also clinched a place in the semis of the Asian tournament.
At half-time, it did not seem like the Saudis would keep the Nigeria date.
Kazakhstan had the edge in attack with the match being closely fought.
Kazakhstan forged ahead when in the 12th minute Saudi goalkeeper Mabrouk
Zaid failed to hold onto a free-kick by Soloshenko Igor and a waiting Urazayev
Yerlan pounced the ball to net it.
But hard work has its rewards and after the breather the Saudis showed
diligence in keeping up the pace of the game and their attack. Kazakhstan on
the other hand retreated into a slightly defensive patch. In the 63rd minute,
the Saudi Arabian bench was thrown into ecstasy as the team was handed a
penalty which Bandr Al Mutari confidently converted.
But as the seconds ticked away and with regulation time closing and the
prospects of Saudi Arabia missing out on the World Cup fast fading - they
needed a win to qualify - Bandr Al Mutari made a glorious night. Jumping high
above the Kazakhstan defense he headed the ball off a free kick in the 90th
minute into goal and the Saudi team rejoiced.
