Match Summary:
MVP: No.1 Kazakhstan
Korea won this match 4-3 on penalty kicks to earn the right to meet Japan in
the final. Both teams were deadlocked 2-2 at the end of regulation time and
extra time failed to yield the expected "golden goal". The second semi-final
almost turned out to be a nightmare for the defending champions. All this
because Korea failed to score in the first half despite the numerous
opportunities presented. In fact, Korea did just about everything but score!
As it was, Kazakhstan emboldened by the Korean impotency swung from defensive
to attacking play into the second half. Credit must be given though to the
Kazakhstan side for their courage and flair in attack. At the heart of the
Kazakhstan game was also the superb performance of goalkeeper Loriya David who
time and again frustrated the Korean attack with his dives and mid-air saves.
Kazakhstan's both goals came off swift counterattacks and their ability to
exploit the Korean weakness on the flanks and the middle. Kazakhstan first
scored when in a counter-attack an unmarked Dinayev Murat hit a well timed
shot which had the Korean goalkeeper completely beaten. Then, from a cross
on the left, a lurking Terassoiv Yeveniv moved quickly to latch onto to the
ball and put it into goal. Korea were fully stretched at the point and really
sweating to get back into the fight. In the 83th minute, Nah Hee Geun hit a
pile driver of a shot from about 35 meters and it streaked into goal to make
it 1-2. With just seven minutes left it was hard to imagine the Korean's
getting the equalizer. But get it they did and it came almost at the end of
time with Lee Bun Jig rising well in the box to head in a corner kick. Still,
winning the match in extra-time proved an impossible task for Korea and it was
left to penalty kicks to decide the outcome. As it was Song Chong Gug (No. 16),
Chun Jao Ho (No 8), Seol Li Hyeon and Koo Dae Ryung found the mark in the
shoot-out while Kim Eun Jung missed. For Kazakhstan, the scorers were
Urazayev Yerlan (No 12), Tarassov Yeveniy (No 11), Soloshenko Igor (No 3)
while Ahiyev Ali and Kumisebekov Aidar missed.
